Cosmic ray burst ASC-281B-94973Y47C was never remembered by humanity as having any major effect on the path of history. But, nevertheless, it did. The tightly packed formation of cosmic rays impacted the side of the reaction chamber at incredible velocity, casing a slurry of charged particles to go flying in every direction. As these particles penetrated the reaction chamber, they hit the side of two identical electromagnetic waves that were being focused inside at opposite vectors. They instantly got trapped, and the air around them started to heat up. Within a few nanoseconds, another batch of cosmic rays hit, and the deuterium-tritium mixture inside the chamber erupted in a fireball of nuclear fusion. The guys running the experiment instantly saw something was wrong. Fusion was occurring inside the reaction chamber, but it was too soon - the initiation process hadn’t begun yet. The atmosphere inside the device had lit up on its own. One of the university students looked at the camera feed, and immediately recognised what was happening. The way the ball of energy inside the chamber was shaped, and the way it was moving, betrayed what it was to anyone who was familiar with the phenomenon. At any other point in time, ball lightning forming inside the reaction chamber of a fusior would have been seen as a curiosity at most. But now, the students were preparing to run an experiment on the particles released by a sustained fusion reaction, which meant they had almost every related instrument the university was in possession of trained on the device. And this was MIT, so they had a lot of instruments. Inside that steel chamber, all of the minute electromagnetic and electrostatic fluctuations that held ball lightning together were being observed and noted by a dozen instruments. And the overlapping electromagnetic fields that had created this phenomenon in the first place were being traced down by the magnetometers that were supposed to be monitoring the magnetic fields in the room caused by the other experiments they had planned to run. What was going to be a normal experiment on charged particles had turned into something that could revolutionise power production for decades. And at the same time, slow humanity’s reach to the stars for centuries. In another timeline, internal electrostatic fusion devices might not have won out over the giant electromagnetic fusion reactors everyone had predicted. In another timeline, more tests might have been carried out on large quantities of high-energy plasmarised deuterium, and not the low temperature deuterium plasmas used in fusors. In another timeline, someone might have noticed the slight changes in gravity around a running tokamak fusion reactor, the ever so subtle warping of spacetime in the presence of their giant amounts of deuterium plasma. But that was not the case. ———— No one ever found out who fired first. Amidst the chaos and destruction, any major amount of information regarding that first launch was lost. We do know that it probably wasn’t the Western Alliance or the Eastern Federation, but rather a random terrorist cell. At the end of the day, it didn’t matter. The effect was the same no matter who it was. In total over 800 nuclear devices were detonated. The total yield was in the gigatons. No major city survived. Washington and Moscow were hit first, followed by every major military base and population centre. 600 million died. The death toll would have been a lot higher if not for the fact that most of the submarines on patrol either didn’t receive firing orders or didn’t act on them. On June 17, 2053, the world ended. ———— The Phoenix roars upwards, climbing out of its silo and into the Montana sky atop a pillar of white smoke and clear flames, the thunder from its engines deafening anyone nearby. Leaning over slightly as it soars towards space, it quickly breaks the sound barrier, shockwaves forming around it as it climbs higher and faster. Once it reaches orbit, the faring panels lining the side of the rockets payload deploy, and the spacecraft is cut free. The spacecraft in question was unremarkable, scrounged together from some leftover Gemini and Apollo components that they had found in a nearby museum. But inside, was a man who was making history. Zefram Cochrane has just become the first human to fly through the heavens above Earth since World War III broke out. And, naturally, he will not be the last. There are plenty of guys on Mars who need resupplies fast, and so there is work to be done. The Phoenix and it’s launch complex could never be used for anything important itself, but that didn’t matter. It had proved to the world that even amongst the chaos, manned spaceflight and exploration was still an achievable goal. ———— The X-15C streaked across the North Atlantic, making sweeping s-turns as it slowly decelerated from orbital velocity. After 55 minutes of skipping through the atmosphere, the spaceplane was nearing its landing site, and the pilot started to drop the nose. Not 15 minutes later, with a bang followed by a tremendous screech the landing skids hit the runway, and the aircraft came to a stop. The X-15C We Still Have Hope had just returned from a resupply and crew rotation run with Space Station Freedom, or at least what’s left of it. Orbiting 200 miles high, the station, which had just 40 years ago been boosted to 500 miles, was within a hairs breadth of entering the atmosphere when Man managed to regain spaceflight capability after WWIII. Being the only large space station left, since all of the more modern ones like Harmony had been targeted with ASATs the moment war broke out, Freedom is a relic from a long gone era, almost as old as the heavily modified X-15 and Gemini spacecraft that are now servicing it. As the pilot and the passenger sitting behind him unstrap themselves and clamber out of the cramped aircraft, perpetrations are already being completed at Launch Complex 3, all the way on the other side of Ascension Island. The Gemini B Perseverance disconnects its umbilicals with the launch tower, and the engines on the Titan III below it ignite, the huge flames and clouds of smoke being visible from the Space Landing Complex four and a half miles away. As the spacecraft rises into the sky We Still Have Hope is wheeled into a hanger, and engineers start ripping off the spent heat shield tiles. ———— Elon was sitting in the mess hall of Mars Research Outpost 3 when it happened. The news wasn’t exactly shocking, per say, everyone had known it was a possibility. But nevertheless the impact was immense. Everyone just froze, looking at the TV screen as the Earth was shattered before their very eyes. It didn’t take long for them to come to their senses again, and start thinking about the future. What had just happened ensured they wouldn’t be getting resupply runs for decades, probably more. But they didn’t need to give up, and abort back to Earth. The base was partially self-sufficient, and with enough work, it could survive until the next resupply missions. It would be hard, but they could do it. The same story played out on the Lunar colonies, and even way out at the bases on Titan and Enceladus. Soon, the Intrepid, powered by its liquid-core NERVA engines was making frequent trips every 3 years between Saturn and Mars, while Starships made trips between the Moon and Mars. Phobos and Saturn’s rings were utilised as refuelling posts, with nuclear reactors electrolysing hundreds of tons of water every month. After a few years of very hard work, life had started to flourish among the heavens. ———— Space Shuttle Endeavour fired off several pulses of its RCS thrusters as it finally made contact with Freedom. Soon, latches mounted around the docking collar swung into place. The RCS was safed, and umbilical connectors clicked together. Finally the hatch was opened, and the crew of STS-283 greeted the crew of Freedom-137. A few days later, as Endeavour remained docked to Freedom, Perseverance departed for the last time. Not one hour later, it was gliding back to Earth beneath its parawing. Endeavour had started life as a replacement to Challenger, and over the years it had endured much, including having its hanger collapse on top of it after a nuclear blast. But now it was once again working to bring about a new age of spaceflight. Together with Atlantis and Buran, Endeavour was a barely reusable spaceplane from a long gone era. But, it was all the Earth had left, as almost every other spacecraft had been incinerated in a nuclear inferno. Freedom had already become a hub for Earth orbital operations, and now it was becoming a hub for operations throughout the entire solar system. Every now-and-then a Starship would swing by from Luna to say hello, but none of them dared to land. If they did, there was no guarantee they could get back into orbit. Now, that had changed. A Space Shuttle could hold 7 people, even more with a dedicated passenger module. Easy transport between Earth and the planets had become possible. ———— Annnnnd,.. that’s it. What you just read is the intro to a story I will never write. I originally wanted to do something like ‘Transcendent Humanity’ in the Star Trek universe, where humans never develop the warp drive and end up maxing out all of our other technologies, but my writing skills are just too bad to do that. It took me weeks to write just this intro bit, and I cannot write convincing characters, so I’ll probably never finish this. If anyone else wants to take a go at it, feel free to. There isn’t anywhere near enough of this on this subreddit, and I just hope this short story will inspire someone with far better skills to do something similar. Also, in the highly unlikely event which will never ever happen ever that someone wants to collaborate with me on this, feel free to DM me. I am an insane (and I mean insane) Star Trek nerd, and I am very good when it comes to aerospace engineering, which means I would be good as a technical advisor.
